NASAM WELCOMES NEW BOARD MEMBERSNASAM's 15 th AGM held on 30 April 2011 saw the appointment of two new Board members. They are Ms Chris Low of Thamesa Sdn Bhd and Ms Phyllis Chan of Digilot (M) Sdn Bhd. We warmly welcome Chris and Phyllis to the NASAM family and extend sincere thanks to Puan Sri Dr Wong, Ms Sheila Joachim and Ms Katherine Lam for their past contributions to NASAM. NASAM STROKE FORUM SERIESFollowing the stroke forum in Malacca on 8 May 2011, NASAM's Stroke Forum series continued in Kuantan and Kuala Lumpur on 15 and 22 May 2011 respectively. In Kuantan, 118 members of the public showed up at Shahzan Inn to learn about stroke, speech therapy and NASAM's rehab therapy while in Kuala Lumpur, 175 persons converged at Berjaya Times Square Hotel to listen to neurologist, Dr Shahnaz, Speech & Language Therapist, Cecilia Santiago and Rehab Manager, Annie Ng. Strokee Edmond Lim and carer Tom Thong also shared their experiences. The audiences at both forums showed keen interest and several of them asked many pertinent questions. The series of forum was made possible by a substantial contribution from main sponsors, Berjaya Cares Foundation and sanofis aventis. PR STUDENTS' INTEREST IN NASAMOn 20 May 2011, five Diploma Public Relations students from TAR College visited NASAM PJ for an informal survey on NASAM's activities. They subsequently brought a group of 22 other students on 25 May 2011 for a full briefing about NASAM. As part of their diploma study programme in public relations, the students are required to do research into the activities of a non- governmental organisation. The students will discuss with us their plans to do voluntary work in NASAM and to create stroke awareness to the public. Rehab Manager, Annie Ng, was on hand to give them a short briefing on NASAM's mission & activities. They also interacted with strokees and volunteers who were present. YOGA TRAININGFive Rehab Therapists from various NASAM clubs, led by Rehab Manager Annie Ng, attended a free International Yoga Instructor Course (IYIC) from 28 May 2011 to 1 June 2011 in Kuala Lumpur. After the intensive hands-on training of five days, the Rehab Therapists are of the opinion that they have learnt some techniques which could be adapted for inclusion into some of the activities of our strokees. 1MEDICAL CAMPNASAM PJ set up a booth at the 1Medical camp organized by the Rotaract Club of Pudu on 28 May 2011 at the SRJK (C) Naam Kheung , Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. The guest-of-honour, Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat, made a brief stop at NASAM's booth and enquired about our activities pertaining to rehabilitation of stroke survivors. Members of the public also showed interest in NASAM's stroke awareness efforts through their questions. They also got themselves the “Understanding Stroke” books which were on display.
