23 Mar 2009MOU SIGNED WITH UKMMCJanet signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with UKMMC, formerly known as Hospital UKM, on 19 March 2009. The MOU involves NASAM’s assistance in the setting up of a stroke resource centre at UKMMC and the development of a training programme for nurses and therapists in order to raise the standard of care for stroke survivors. Earlier, the Vice Chancellor of UKM had launched the “Stroke Public Awareness Day” where NASAM set up booth at UKMMC’s lobby. Physio Consultant Francesca gave 2 talks on “There is Life After Stroke : The NASAM Experience” during the day. NASAM Vice Chairman Sheila Joachim, Secretary Betty Chew and Treasurer Eng Lian Geok together with Margaret Chang and Tracy Chan were also present. SPEECH THERAPY TRAININGEight regular speech therapy volunteers at NASAM PJ received formal training from Speech Therapist, Dyani, on 16 March 2009. Margaret Chang gave an overview of NASAM before Dyani went into the technical aspects of speech therapy for strokees. The training concluded with a talk on counselling by Vice Chairman, Sheila Joachim. IT’S PARTY TIMEYes, get ready to party from 9pm on 23 April 2009 (Thursday) till 3am at The Pulse, Grand Millennium, Jalan Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur in aid of NASAM Ampang. Tickets are available with a minimum donation of RM200/ticket for which a tax-exempt receipt will be issued. The ticket will entitle you to a welcome drink, party food, hour-long showtime and the opportunity to dance with “celebrities”. And if you are feeling lucky, do take part in the lucky dip! So bring out your dancing shoes and come dressed “Wild ‘n’ Beautiful” for an exciting evening of dance, songs and fun. DIET TALKSNASAM PJ strokees, carers and volunteers were educated on diet and given talks on fats & cholesterol as well as salt & sugar by students in dietetics from UPM on 10 & 11 March 2009. ORPHANS VOLUNTEERIn the spirit of volunteerism, 12 orphans from Rumah Penjagaan Xavier volunteered their services at NASAM PJ on 19 and 20 March 2009. Thank you, boys, for the wonderful spirit of sharing. “A BETTER TOMORROW”NASAM JB’s inaugural fundraising dinner themed “A Better Tomorrow” received rousing reception on 20 March 2009. Held at the Grand Straits Garden Restaurant, more than 400 guests were touched by the performances put up by NASAM JB’s strokees, carers and volunteers. These included songs and a Hawaiian dance, for which they had put in a lot of effort. The bids for the items on auction exceeded A pat on the back for the Organising Committee, NASAM JB Committee members, strokees, carers, staff, volunteers for a job well done.
